Nike

The Winged Victory of Samothrace at the Louvre

How I well remember the first glimpse of her marble form in the Louvre. The living stone of the goddess of Victory seemed lit from within. Even though she was headless, her beauty brought tears to my eyes.

Her name is Nike, daughter of the Titan Styx who inhabited the underground river that separated earth from the Underworld of Hades.

Styx, as well as being the name of Nike's mother, was the name of a classic Chicago-based rock band that made some hits in the late seventies and early eighties.

Nike's name was co-opted for the running shoe brand.
